7 Things Burglars Look For Before They Enter Your Home Is your home an easy target for burglars? Most people like to think that their home is safe from harm, but the truth is many people make critical mistakes that could cost them big. Even the smallest of things, like leaving your doors unlocked when home, can put you in harm’s way. Do a quick inventory of your home and see what you can do to safeguard your abode. Here are the things burglars look at before hitting your household. 1. Everyone Is Gone During The Day Many people feel that burglaries happen during the daytime. More than 65 percent of household robberies occur between 6 am till 6 pm. When everyone is out of the home, there is less hassle. Since no one thinks a house can be hit during the daylight, security is not as high as it is during the nighttime. Plus, the robbers do not want to mess with people being home. 2. Unlocked Windows and Doors There is nothing better than raising the window for fresh air. The problem is that many people close the window and forget to lock it. Burglars almost always check for an open window first. They can easily slide it up and enter without anyone even hearing a peep. Forget broken glass and a big commotion, if you leave your window unlocked, you are asking for trouble. The same goes for your doors. Check and double check to make sure you lock your windows and doors. 3. Mail and Newspapers Piling Up The last thing a burglar wants is a confrontation with you. They watch for the times you are not home, and they wait till you are gone for extended periods. If your mail is piling up in the box and there are newspapers on the steps, then they know that you are not home. Have a neighbor get your papers, and the post office will hold your mail. Having a pile of either near your home is an open invitation to criminals. 4. An Unlocked Garage Door Home security systems are essential on all doors and windows in the home. Garage doors are commonly left unlocked. Even if the most affluent communities, people forget to lock these doors. Quit making it easy for the burglar. Lock your garage doors and keep them closed. It makes it easier to get large items out without a problem. 5. There Is No Dog While dogs do not discourage all burglars, they indeed divert a few. A deep bark can mean a tough breed that can bite and potentially cause great harm. Most criminals look for homes where dogs are not present to keep them from being wounded in the hit. Any obstruction can lessen the chances of your home being robbed. 6. There is No Security System A security system means that a burglar must work fast enough to get the goods before the police come. If there is no security system, the job becomes easy. Any sign in the yard that warns of a protection device or monitoring station visible from the window may be enough to keep your home safe. 7. Basement Windows One of the most common places to enter a home is through the basement. Those funnily shaped windows are just big enough for a small guy to fit through. Going around to the back of the house makes it less likely that anyone will see them, and they can take their time. If you have a large privacy fence, it can distract them from getting into the yard, but it only helps shield them from the neighbors. Security systems are there to divert up to 99 percent of the thieves. There are still those people that are determined to come through no matter if you have a dog, security system or gun in your hand. You just hope you never encounter that person.
