Healthy wisdom teeth help with chewing, but slanted wisdom teeth can harm the teeth that are developing next to them. According to research, impacted wisdom teeth increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease if they are not removed.
The American Dental Association recommends that patients begin having their wisdom teeth checked at age 16. By doing this, a dentist will be alert for any signs that the teeth are impacted, crowded, or that cavities or gum disease have started to establish themselves in the wisdom teeth or tissues nearby. Patients should undergo removal if it is determined that it is essential around the age of 20. This is due to the undeveloped roots and less procedural problems.
