Probiotic Bacteria History and Benefits
|
Posted: September 30, 2016 |
Probiotic bacteria were first discovered in 1907 by russian scientist Ilie Metchnikoff who was also received a Nobel prize for discovering white blood cells. The longevity and health of people living in certain regions of Bulgaria attracted his attention and he began to wonder why they lived healthier, longer lives.
He concluded that it was because of something that was in their diet, more specifically yogurt, a fermented product that they all consumed.
As we know today, fermented products, wether they are foods or beverages like wine, contain bacteria in them.
The same can be said for cultured vegetables like sauerkraut and other pickled vegetables. He thought that these bacteria, which are called probiotic bacteria, were a part of the reason why these people were healthy and lived pretty long lives. Was he right? Yes he was.
Eventually he suggested back in 1907 that by colonizing the human body with such microorganisms we would be healthier and many more studies on probiotic bacteria have been done and some are still being done and we have evidence to support his theory which is of course no longer a theory but the truth.
Probiotic bacteria do indeed improve our overall health but some people receive their benefits more than others because of course not everybody has many probiotics in their bodies because they come mainly from these foods that contain them and if an individual does not have such a source of probiotic bacteria, his or her body will lack probiotic bacteria.
Scientists say that the human body can have as many as 100 trillion microorganisms living in it, since bacteria can reproduce very fast, at an incredible rate.
Bacteria in their natural enviroment break down organic matter, the bodies of dead animals, plants, etc. In our bodies they can break down food which we eat, thus offering digestive support because by doing this they indirectly help us digest food faster and better, get more nutrients from it and somehow they even synthesize vitamins.
Incredible is also the fact that they can produce natural antibiotics and promote levels of nydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide in the body, providing immune support as well, helping in reducing infection and helping in treating infection in the human body.
