Ayurveda and Digestion

Food that reflects these qualities support it, while food that oppose it will weaken it. Ayurveda recommends eating light, sattvic and easily digestible food. One must eat appropriately at the appropriate time and allow one meal to digest before taking the next meal.
To activate the salivary glands one can take a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger with some salt and lemon juice. For overactive agni, this combination should be substituted with pomegranate chutney. This will slow down the agni. However, Ayurveda does not recommend cooling down its effects. Hence, cold drinks and food during mealtime should be avoided.
Ayurvedic Remedies
There are some simple Ayurvedic remedies that you can try for common digestive problems. Some of these can easily be made at home, while some are available by PCD pharma companies. Some common ingredients that support the agni are:
Carom Seed (Ajwain): This has always been a favourite in dealing with digestion problems. Chewing carom seeds with a pinch of rock salt can help in easing digestive problems. Half teaspoon of the seeds with some water everyday will further help digestive functions.
Cumin: or jeera seeds are an effective remedy against gas. Boil a teaspoon of jeera in two cups of water for 10-15 minutes. Cool and strain the liquid. Take it after every meal for curbing gas.
Asafoetida (Heeng): Ayurveda believes that heeng helps in balancing the vata in our body. It is extremely effective for curbing flatulence. Dissolve half a teaspoon heeng in luke warm water and drink it up.
Lime juice: Lime juice with baking powder can be very effective in dealing with gas build up in the body. Simply mix half teaspoon baking powder in some lime juice (1 tsp juice in one cup) and quickly drink it up.
Fresh ginger: Ginger is highly recommended in Ayurveda when dealing with digestive problem. One remedy of ginger and salt is mention above. You can also chew on fresh ginger after meal to curb gas formation. Ginger tea mixed with honey is also very effective.
Black pepper: This is very effective in dealing with indigestion, acidity and gar problems. It also acts as an appetiser. Take some powdered pepper mixed with malted jaggery or mix a quarter teaspoon pepper in thinned buttermilk for treating indigestion.
Tulsi: This plant has both holy and medicinal property as per Ayurveda. One can chew on tulsi leaves or boil them in water for some tulsi tea for some relief from acidity.
