Fluid retention is accumulation of body fluid in the circulatory system of the human body. We have often heard that the individual is having fluid retention or edema as previously called, due to no reasons, or an infection or associated problem with the system. Ideally, fluid retention is taken as a symptom of an underlying disease renal failure, constipation, defective or blocked circulatory mechanism of the body. Here are a few habits you can gain to have no or reduced fluid retention. 1. Take in 6-7 glasses of water every day- Water helps body stay hydrated which works for cleaning the system and relieving you from any accumulated fluid. 2. Reduce salt in-take see good results-Sodium has been found to increase fluid in the body and may cause fluid retention in lower limbs or abdomen. It has also been seen that untimely eating habit, binging on snacks may also increase fluid retention which may be seen as puffy eyes, distended abdomen, edema on face, swollen or edematous hands and feet. 3. Exercise- In every good habit list you will find this word. Fluid retention in a limb or a body part also occurs if there is no movement or anti-gravity position. Movement and anti-gravity positions reduce fluid retention. Elevating your feet might also help if you are working for long hours and see a swollen feet usually. 4. Take in minerals and vitamins in your routine diet- Vitamins, minerals and b-complex are micro nutrients but have a major role to play. Potassium is one such micro-nutrient that helps in reducing sodium content and is widely found in fruit, vegetables and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin B5 and B6 are also vital for circulation. 5. Diuretics as advised by doctors can work for some and may not work for a few- Diuretics help in reducing fluid retention but needs to be prescribed by a practitioner under whose guidance you are being treated. 6. There are many herbs which can also be used to reduce edema-Vapourisers, massage oils fragrance, baths help individuals reduce fluid retention. It has been found that lavender, rosemary and cypress help in the reduction of edema. 7. If you are a women, having fluid retention you must keep a check on your biological clock.-Periods, date missed, and if any gynaecological issue, everything must be dealt to find the actual cause of fluid retention. Men may check smoking or alcohol consumption as a reason for fluid retention and distended abdomen as seen usually.
