Drug abuse is a major problem in the world today. Organizations and government agencies are constantly looking for ways of dealing with these issues. As they try to solve the abuse puzzle, it is crucial to understand the real problem. A solution can only be achieved once people understand the problem. Questions like, what drive a person to abuse drugs or substance can be understood if we take a critical look at the individual rather than the abuse itself. Research indicates that people who tend to show certain traits are more likely to abuse drugs at certain points of their lives. Treatment and corrective mechanism can only be effective if they customized to these different personality traits. Personality traits people who abuse drugs Anxiety It is important to dissect these traits before trying to prescribe any corrective actions that can be taken. Anxiety is a major trait. A person who is usually anxious is more likely to abuse substances. This is drawn from the understanding that such a person may be facing some major problem or challenge and does not know what to do about it. He would most likely resolve to use drugs in order to shift his attention from such issues. Impulsiveness This relates to emotional controls that drive someone to do something. It is a common feature to find people doing things involuntarily. Such traits could be a factor to drug abuse. This is because one might not realize that whatever they are doing is bad. Most people who abuse drugs or substance cannot explain their action since they are guided by deep emotions. They would never develop the required discipline to stop these habits. Their logical thinking is thwarted and cannot help themselves either. Negative thinking Developing negative views about other people or the world could also be a huge factor that enhances drug abuse. Low self-esteem is a huge problem among the youth and even much older people. These people feel that they are not worthy and therefore resort to abusing drugs as a way out of such problems. People who demonstrate such traits can easily be helped if they visit a counselor. Sensational seeking These traits are quite prevalent among the teens and by extension to the youth. Most of victims would engage in drug and substance abusive behavior to belong to a certain group of people.
