Good news and bad news: your teen is going to summer camp. While you may relish in your ability to take that couples trip to San Diego finally, you are also going to be sobbing every few minutes as you realize that your baby is almost an adult. Still, you can hold on to the reigns for a bit longer yet as you help them pack for summer camp.
Before your teen gets choosy about which jeans to pack, you must make sure that they bring along their ID (or passport). Of course, teens are at the age where personal style often trumps comfort. However, there are a few things to take along that are more functional. Pack at least outfit per day, and a spare or two just in case; you may also pack a swimsuit or a dressy outfit, but this may depend on where your teen is going. Do not forget pajamas, underwear and socks (a pair for each day), comfortable shoes and sandals, necessary hair accessories, and outerwear.
Pack all necessary toiletries as well: shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, combs or brushes, deodorant, and sunscreen. Bug spray is also something to bring along, especially in a camping area in the summertime. Of course, your teen may be going somewhere with the atypical weather. In such a case, make sure to understand the climate of the area during the time he'll be away to pack for it properly.
Most importantly, you should remember that your teen should be able to pack their bags. That is not to say that you should not remind them to pack every underwear or their allergy medication, but as summer camp is an excellent opportunity to foster independence and allow them to grow into their person, packing is a good first step.
Still, make a list. Packing for summer camp can be an overwhelming task in itself, as your teen will be away from home for several weeks and you do not want to forget anything important. Be cautious about bringing along laptops, game consoles, or tablets, and advice your teen to be careful with their valuables. Journals are often brought along, and even homework if necessary.
From science camps to mission trips for teens, summer camp is an excellent experience for both teens and parents. They foster independence and give teens a unique opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and about new cultures, and find out who they are as a person.
