It goes almost without saying that when it comes to storms and hurricanes, concrete storm shelters stand out as the best escape plans. Unfortunately, most homeowners know little or sometimes nothing about when and where to place storm shelters. But like you are about to find out, finding the most appropriate location for your storm shelter should be easy.
Inside the houseThis is by far the most common location. It should however be noted that it is not so easy to go for this option if you already have a house ready. In other words, fixing a storm shelter inside a house should be done when the house is still under construction. It should be part and parcel of the building process. The reason is simple – storm shelters and safe rooms can easily be built at the same time the foundation is underway. All's not lost, though; for those who still find it prudent to have a storm shelter inside the house. Simply transform a closet, a pantry house or even the laundry room into a safe room. Then if you have enough space or your budget allows it, install a ground shelter under the stairwell or have it installed underground inside the garage. Outside the houseThere are several reasons why safety experts recommend fixing storm shelters outside the house. Some reasons have everything to do with structural needs as well as safety requirements while some reasons have a lot to do with budget. Either way, the storm shelter should not be located far away from the main house. It should be easily accessible. So to be on the safe side, make sure the storm shelter is less than 50 meters from the house. Note that ground storm shelters are usually installed at least one foot from the garage door. This is always the case so as to ensure ease of access as already mentioned. But there are other reasons such as:
Other factorsYour storm or tornado shelter should be located in an area that does not flood when it pours heavily. It should also be located in a clear area, away from trees, windmills or other tall structures that can fall during a storm or a tornado. Then like any safety expert will tell you, always carry the essentials with you into the storm shelter. It is in fact, a good idea to always ensure the storm shelter as basic first aid kit all the time. You never know how long you may get stuck there in case of an emergency. Carry your cell phone too with you.
