How To Upcycle A Bedside Table With Chalk Paint And New Handles This night table makeover is the last in my trio of chalk paint makeovers. Numerous of the DIY tasks I've undertaken at house http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch/?action=click&contentCollection®ion=TopBar&WT.nav=searchWidget&module=SearchSubmit&pgtype=Homepage#/interior design this year have involved pre-owned furniture and a tin of chalk paint. In truth, recalling, nearly every room in my home has actually had a makeover of this nature eventually. There's just something so satisfying about bringing a piece of unloved furnishings back to life and adding a crisp new coat of paint to absolutely transform it from worn-out to wise. And as much as I think of varying it, it's usually constantly white paint, although i'm determined to attempt an actual various colour next time. When I was embellishing my bedroom I understood precisely the kind of bedside table I wanted. White-painted wood, with a New England/ Coastal feel, smart brass deals with and a pull out drawer. Nevertheless, it's something understanding what you want, but another completely to understand that painted strong wood night table are pricey. And whilst reliable furniture is constantly worth the investment, I simply didn't have the budget plan to invest at this moment. But I didn't wish to purchase inexpensive, MDF ones either that would break down in a couple of years. So I needed to get imaginative. After much looking I lastly found a nearly matching set of tables in TK Maxx. They were clearly from different batches as they had different manages and a little different wood varnish on top however they were the very same shape and size. They were cream coloured, not the white I was looking for, however they were really well made and an excellent cost. I brought them house, put them in place and attempted to see if I might cope with them. I could, of course; they're just bedside tables. However as I slowly purchased and put together the rest of my bedroom furnishings (in crisp white) the cream and wood combination started to look a bit incongruous and a bit too 'rustic' looking. So, inspired by my earlier cooking area transformation I chose to provide the bedside tables a fresh coat of crisp white chalk paint and upgrade the deals with for a fresh (and matching) look. I started by giving the tables a light sand down. You do not require to when using chalk paint, but I think it assists to accelerate the procedure, particularly as the existing wood had a shiny varnish on it. I then used the first, thin coat of chalk paint. This is constantly the minute where I begin to wonder what I've done. It looks shabby and untidy and when you see the wood grain disappear I understand i've passed by the defining moment. If you feel the very same, this is the point where you need a little faith in your vision for the completed result! In the spirit of sharing the 'do's and 'do n'ts' of painting furnishings though, I picked this picture to show you a prime example of everything not to do when carrying out a paint makeover. The principles for painting furniture are: 1. Paint outside in a well ventilated area 2. Location the feet on strong cardboard or wood rollercoasters 3. Eliminate everything from drawers prior to you begin 4. Click for more info Make sure you can easily reach all sides of the piece of furnishings As you can see, in the photo above i've broken every guideline. I was in such a rush I thought I could simply quickly paint it in-situ with a little bit of paper below and the drawer still in place. I couldn't. So after I took this photo of embarassment I moved the table outside and painted it correctly, following my Dad's maxim that 'if a job's with doing, it's worth succeeding'. I used three coats of Pure White paint by Annie Sloan (bought online from Rigby and Mac) to provide a clean, crisp surface area and finished it with one layer of clear wax. To include a little character I bought these sleeping-fox drawer deals with from Oliver Bonas to change the existing chrome ones and included them on when the paint had actually dried. I've kept the old, chrome manages for future jobs. And this is the finished result. I did think thoroughly about painting over the wooden top as it was lovely, solid wood and it appeared an embarassment to conceal the grain, so I could have sanded it down and simply lightented the varnish, however i'm happy with the final impact as I believe the white really emphasises the magnificently shaped edge of the strong wood top and the table now has a lovely crisp overview. The tables also fit in far better with the rest of my bedroom furniture and I believe the space has a lot more of a cohesive, calm feel now.
