Robert "Scott" Benny, the game writer and designer known for his work on the original Fallout games, has sadly passed away. Benny is perhaps best known as the creator of Dogmat and the Mysterious Stranger, two figures who appear in every installment of the post-apocalyptic RPG series. Although the Fallout games are based on real locations, developers like Scott Benny have worked tirelessly to bring the irradiated wasteland to life.
Since the release of the first Fallout in 1997, Dogmat has become a beloved character in the apocalyptic saga. The companion dog is usually depicted as a blue Heeler or German Shepherd, which serves as a reference to the dog depicted in the post-apocalyptic movie Mad Max 2. In the original game, Dogmeat is found in Junktown and becomes a loyal sidekick to any player who feeds him. Bethesda Game Studios brought Dogmeat back in 2008's Fallout 3, and Fallout 4 features another canine companion. Unfortunately, the Dogmeat model from Fallout 4 passed away in June 2021, leading to the memorials in the game world.
Scott Benny, creator of Dogmeat and a key tool in the creation of the original Fallout, passed away at the age of 61. The tragic loss was reported by The Gamer, and a touching eulogy came in the form of a Facebook post from fellow gamer Jesse Heinig. Heinig worked with Benny as a programmer on Fallout, and he has since worked as a writer and developer on numerous Magic: The Ascension games. Scott Benny is remembered as a pillar of the game industry, a prolific writer, and a generally kind man. Benny was also active in the Champion Online community, remembered for his role-playing as a selfless hero named Thundrax. There have been words of gratitude for Benny in the gaming communities, including Champions Online's Twitter account.
