The Joy of Growing Tomatoes at Home |
Posted: January 15, 2015 |
There are many people who are now into farming at home. One of the products that they are very fond of growing is the humble tomato. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the tomato is quite simple to grow, and once certain simple processes are followed, the grower can end up with some tasty vegetables. One of the first things to do is to find the right container. There are people who use many different types of containers like terra-cotta pots and whiskey barrel halves, but the best results can be obtained by using clay pots. Once you get the clay pots and put the seeds in them, it would be a good idea to cage them. Many people use concrete reinforcing wire to keep the clay pot safe from outside influences and this method has proven to be very effective. Another reason that netting is so important is because there are always cases where insects are attracted to the soil and the plants. They attack the carefully laid garden of the farmer and eat up and infect all the crops. It is not just that they attack once and then they go away. They keep coming at regular intervals. The farmer has to be constantly vigil against this threat and make sure that no damage is caused. That is the reason that he has to put the fencing so that no further attacks take place. It is also important that the garden is protected against the threat of caterpillars. Sometimes these insects are camouflaged against the brown soil and the green roots, and it is hard to spot them. The farmer needs to carefully nurture and nourish the soil and make sure that none of these pests are lying around. In case they are then they need to be removed and disposed off. Not only that, it is also essential that the farmer get to the root of the problem and find out where the source of these pests are. Once the source has been found then strict action needs to be taken so that they do not attack again. The next thing that the farmer should do is to make sure that the pot has good drainage facilities. Unless the pot has good drainage facilities, the roots will not grow to be strong and healthy. This is even more important if one plans to grow the tomatoes in a vegetable garden rather than in a pot. The garden and the pot should not be kept outdoors when the monsoon rains are beating down hard and the floods from the onrushing waters threatens to sweep the crop away. They should be kept in a safe place where the vagaries of nature will not threaten to destroy all the hard work that the farmer has put in for such a long time. For tomatoes to grow strong and healthy, it is essential that they get plenty of calcium and magnesium. Where can these ingredients come from? One of the best places to get them is through dolomitic limestone. You do not really need a lot. You basically need just one cup of it, which then has to be mixed in the potting bag. Iron and trace can also be put in this mix which can then produce the results that the farmer is looking for. For many people farming can seem like a lot of work. They might wonder if it is really worth all the effort. But once they put in the effort and once the results come out, they will know that it is worth it. There is a lot of money that is saved when you grow vegetables at home. There is also the joy of being self-sufficient. Then there is the instant access one has to nutritious and healthy vegetables. When the family is sitting down at the dinner table, and when the salad is passed around, and everyone digs into those ripe, red tasty tomatoes then you would know that all that effort was worth it. That also acts as the motivation to try again for a fresh crop that would produce those same results.
