The majority of Brits can recall their very first vacation away from home. Adolescents spend this carefree summer following graduating from high school, partly because it's their final opportunity to have pure pleasure before adulthood begins. It sits on the brink of adulthood, which is both exciting and intimidating. How to Have Sex by Molly Manning Walker examines this concern under the distinct prism of stigma, giving this rite of passage a depth of meaning and commentary. It is the London Film Festival's high point this year.
As Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce) and her friends Skye (Lara Peake) and Em (Enva Lewis) arrive in Malia, Crete for their first unsupervised vacation, the movie opens with cheers and laughter. They are sixteen, have completed their exams, and are anticipating a vacation filled with drinking, dancing, partying, swimming, and maybe even some sex. While Tara is equally gregarious as Skye and Em, she is a virgin and so particularly eager to have sex at last. But the abrupt independence of their journey exposes them to the harsh realities of a larger world that is only now becoming accessible to them.
Walker captures the pure joy of that first vacation in the first few shots. The girls are thrilled at the prospect of creating new memories and run, laugh, scream, and sing at the top of their lungs. Tracking shots and dramatic cuts that showcase the trip's exhilarating moments are employed by the editing and cinematography, matching this style. The nightclubs are filled with vibrant strobe lights, and the warm Greek sunshine pours down upon the hotel and beaches, matching the girls' exuberance. The filming only seems to get more delightfully chaotic as the protagonists enjoy the joyful chemistry and sexual tension in the air when they meet up with a bunch of lads, led by the attractive Paddy, Samuel Bottomley, and Badger, Shaun Thomas.
