The revolution that is intuitive hands-free computing is already here, and it is incredible! According to Mark Warburton from Ivory Egg, he described the experience of hands-free computing as “the first time people have communicated with computers and machines using our own natural interface instead of a machine interface such as a keyboard, mouse or screen.” The way technology is booming, and our voices are becoming a significant medium of interaction with all the machinery present in our surroundings. It is something that we all have been looking forward to, with Gartner projecting that by the end of 2020, around 3.3% of global households will have their very own virtual assistant. Things don’t stop here, in order to achieve holistic development in the technological environment, modern domestic living is set to undergo a significant change. Due to the popularisation of the connected home, one that comes with the integration of several devices, services and apps in real-time. Smart home automation allows different approaches to entertainment, communication, security, etc. However, the focus will mostly be on – user comfort and efficient resource usage. According to another research by BI intelligence, it showed that the demand for smart homes solutions would push shipments of smart home/ smart building appliances to compound annual growth of 67% over the 2014–2019 period. Still, many of these do not support voice interfaces. To shed some more light on the home automation, Jessica Ekholm, Research Director at Gartner, beautifully describes one of the essential reasons for the spike in wireless-speaker personal assistants. It all boils down to comfort, “Having to carry a smartphone around the home, and find the correct app, in order to turn the lights on and off does not amount to a seamless, convenient experience.” Whereas personal assistants do, they are supported by significant improvements in word error rates (WER). A lot of growth has been made in WER by advancements in fields like artificial intelligence and voice recognition algorithms. With the help of such improvements in accuracy through time has made voice assistants more captivating to the consumers and is building a new ecosystem with various integrated 3rd party services. One company that we trust when it comes to home automation India is Schneider Electric. It is based on the standard protocol KNX, and the company has home automation and tertiary buildings management solutions, it is designed to maximize flexibility, comfort, safety and profitability, especially for new buildings.
