Languages have many nuances and it needs a dedicated student to master a language. Even though English is spoken in many countries around the world, usage varies from country to country – people need a fairly good grasp over the language to understand how usage differs. For those who are beginners and live in a foreign country, one way to do better is to get a tutor to help them in the learning process. Characteristics of a language tutor: If anyone is considering becoming one of the pro English tutors, they need to have the following qualities – patience, flexibility, curiosity, empathy, intelligence, cooperative nature; knowledge, enthusiasm and they have to be genuine people.
If a person has these qualities, it becomes easy to get qualified as an English tutor by doing ESL courses. It is not essential to get certified to teach speakers of other languages – if a person has the interest and likes interacting with people from different countries, it is easy to engage them in conversations first and then slowly start teaching them English. Having a teaching background helps and one can find all kinds of materials online to tutor students. What should be included in lesson plans? Depending on the frequency of the lessons, lesson plans should loosely follow the following format – main topic, objective of the lesson, what activities and research a student should take up, evaluating a student’s understanding of the subject and how they answer the questions at the end of the lesson. Tutors should try and introduce a main topic per lesson – if the lesson lasts 2 hours, it gives the teacher and student a chance to sit and discuss it thoroughly. For example, if the topic is prepositions of place, simple past, modal verbs or even pronunciation, it should be covered well so that the student gets a good understanding and one can build on that knowledge base. Ensure that the scope of the lesson is kept simple and students grasp concepts and use them effectively. Students should be able to use the concepts learned in the right manner and do the homework assigned to them. English Tutors have the responsibility of making lessons interesting and making up games so that students learn concepts well and in a way that they remember. Games, quizzes, exercises in writing and speaking are all part of the curriculum. Evaluating what a student has learnt is important as well because this will give students an idea of what they have assimilated. Tutors have to be responsible and make lesson plans in advance, ensure that they inform students in case they are cancelling or rescheduling classes, what they charge for lessons and so on. Tutors can have students come over to their homes for lessons or meet at an agreed upon place and hold lessons. It is a student’s responsibility to take learning seriously and do the work assigned to them.
