A hand loom is a simple weaving machine that is manually operated. It is an apparatus on which weavers create fabric by interlacing the warp and weft threads. By providing tension on the warp threads, a hand loom enables the weaver to weave efficiently.
Handlooms and the clothes woven by them, still provide bread to many in India. Nearly four million in our country are engaged in weaving fabrics (handlooms) of nearly 23 different varieties. The Handloom Census of India, undertaken in 2009-10, places the number of handloom textile workers at 27.83 lakhs, making them the single largest group of artisans in India.
