The Dos and Don'ts of Setting up a Business Website |
Posted: September 26, 2019 |
It’s nearly impossible to overstate the importance of a professional website for a business. A company’s site is its home base, its platform to interact with consumers, and its storefront all in one. Given that fact, business owners must take particular care when setting up a site for their organization. A few mistakes in website maintenance, design, or implementation could end up costing you a huge amount of potential revenue. To ensure that you avoid common website errors, here are several key dos and don’ts of setting up a professional site: Do: Pick a Solid Domain NameA silly or inappropriate domain name can shake consumer trust before they even reach your site. As such, do your best to find a domain that reflects what your business is and what you do. Note, including a keyword related to your industry within a domain name is a solid idea most of the time. Don’t: Procrastinate It takes Google and other search engines several weeks to begin indexing newly registered sites. Because of this, it’s imperative that business owners register their professional site well in advance of launch date. Otherwise, it could be difficult for initial customers to find it. Do: Set up a BlogSome business owners may balk at the prospect of starting a business blog. They may not see the value in writing about their products or services. However, the reality is that virtually every business online today –– from OTW Safety to the Home Depot –– maintains some semblance of a blog. The good news is, you don’t have to be an excellent writer to produce excellent content. Just focus on addressing customer questions in your work and you’ll be just fine! Don’t: Go Overboard Pictures, graphics, gifs, and images are all great resources that business owners can use to enliven their site. Nevertheless, they must also resist the temptation to go overboard; don’t clutter your site with unnecessary or unprofessional visual content. Furthermore, it’s okay to stick with a Wordpress template when you create a business site. Customizing a website requires lots of time and money, which not all business owners have at their disposal. Do: Keep Updating!Once you’ve completed your site and launched it, you no longer have to worry about changing anything on it. Right? Wrong. Websites are not pieces of art to be preserved and admired for all time. Rather, they’re fluid, active entities that can and should change over time. Make sure that your site is up-to-date and accurately reflects the evolution of your business. Failing to do so is selling your company short!
