When I place an order for lanyards for my company, I also place an order for plastic pocket folders – these are the small transparent plastic packets into which we slip in the identity card and attach the plastic folder to the lanyard. They can also be called badge holders or plastic pockets or even ID holders.
Lanyards usually come in one standard size and style but the plastic pockets folder depend on the size of the ID card that will be put into it. The standard size is usually 85mm x 55mm, which is the normal business card / credit card size. But you could also order custom sizes – especially larger ones for trade fairs and conferences where people’s names should be easy to see from a distance.
The plastic pockets folder can be attached or detached from the lanyard using the metal clip that is attached at the end of the lanyard. Being fully transparent, the plastic pockets allow the user to display their identity tags. The thin plastic pockets folder allow the use of scanners (in case the id tag has a bar code or QR code).
Plastic pockets folders are available in ‘soft’ or ‘hard’ material. The soft material plastic pockets folder are made from ultra-thin, ultra-transparent plastic. Whereas the ‘hard’ plastic pockets folder are made from thicker material and are more rigid. If the pockets are to be used just for a short period of time, say 1-2 days, then the soft type is fine. However, if the badge holder is to be used regularly then the hard variety is much more durable.
The soft plastic pockets folder is ideal for ID cards that are made from paper or cardboard. The hard plastic pockets folders are ideal for credit card type entry keys that gain access to a building for example. Both types are available in different sizes.
Now here’s a secret to totally rocking your plastic pockets folders; you can order custom made plastic pockets folders. These are intended for use with specific sized or shaped cards. My own company orders plastic pockets folders for short-term use (such as during conferences and events), and long-term use i.e. by staff for purpose of wearing their identity cards daily.
As a rule of thumb, when ordering for the staff, I order three times the required quantity because these plastic pockets folders have a habit of gathering scratches and therefore require to be replaced frequently. Sometimes they get caught in the lift door or briefcase and end up getting bent or even torn. For this reason, a large number of plastic pockets folders are issued throughout the year and I aways keep some in stock and top it up when necessary.
My company buys its lanyards and plastic pockets folders from www.irelandlanyards.com which is a leading supplier of plastic pocket folders in Ireland. We get a mix of soft and hard holders and distribute them as necessary. I would highly recommend them for good quality products and also service.
