Reducing The Risk by Using Underground Warning Tape for Electrical Cables Posted: June 7, 2023 |
It is usual practise to bury power cables while installing them in metropolitan areas. Direct-buried cables are installed below ground to lessen public inconvenience and danger during construction. Future excavation and digging by others is fraught with danger. In 2010, the tip of a ground breaker severed an 11kV cable that was buried about 80cm underground, severely burning a construction worker's face, neck, and arms. This incident highlighted the importance of properly marking and tiling buried electrical cable. At least a million watts of power surged through the instrument, vaporising the tip and injuring the worker. In March of 2014, during construction of a new substation, a digger's bucket accidentally hit a 20kV subterranean electric cable. Thankfully, neither worker was hurt, but the situation was nevertheless significant enough to warrant an HSE probe. HSE digger case investigator Andrea Robbins made the following statement: "The construction industry needs to have a better understanding of the risks associated with working near active underground services." Plans and checks and balances should be in place at all times. Not doing so increases the risk of coming into contact with the live cables, which can have disastrous results. Products have been created to lessen the likelihood of workers accidentally interrupting power supply and putting themselves at risk of injury or death due to burred cables. Concrete tiles and heavy-duty 60 micron thick plastic tape tiles are only two examples of the buried cable marking and tiling products offered by Singhal Industries Private Limited. Our extensive product line offers many benefits, not the least of which is the prevention of harm and the saving of lives. A cable's impact resistance can be increased through tiling, and it will be less likely to be damaged during limited digging and interruption if the cables are properly marked. This will help to minimise power outages for consumers. When compared to the time and money needed to replace damaged or severed sections of underground electrical cables, the time and money saved by using cable markers to identify and safeguard these lines is substantial. We also provide a metal detector-detectable subterranean warning tape with two stainless steel wires running through it so that any necessary adjustments can be made before any digging is done. In the end, being careful when burying cable can prevent injuries and save money on subsequent operations. Please forward this information to anyone who might benefit from it.
