Uses One might wonder what an abrasive disc actually does. These discs are used in the removal of surface materials, like ceramics, metal, glass, paints, plastics, burrs, and various other imperfections. It finds its uses in sanding applications.
Implementation Abrasive discs find their implementation in grinding, surface preparation, polishing, and sanding. All of these processes are done by mounting these units on a grinder, sander, or a tool of a similar kind. Materials Used The materials that go into the making of abrasive discs include one or more backing types. Backings usually provide a flexible element to these discs. The abrasive grains are then attached to these flexible materials. The types of backings that are used include cloth, film, fiber, foam, metal, and sponge.
Types The classification of an abrasive disc is based on the kind of backing used. A cloth disc contains a woven fabric like material, for instance cotton, and finds application in abrasive planing. Another type of abrasive disc is the fiber disc. A fiber disc is made of chemically treated or vulcanized cellulose or cotton fibers. It is important to note that during humid conditions, fiber discs may start to curl up. When it comes to film discs, the abrasive grains are used on plastic films. On the other hand, sponge and foam discs make use of abrasive grains which are attached to a layer of foam, felt, sponge, or some other material that are more on the softer side. The last type of abrasive disc is a metal disc, where abrasive grains are attached to a metal, like brass or aluminum.
