From the moment you step foot into a new home, you will unwittingly pass judgement on what you see. This is why in movies you often see the characters commenting on “what a lovely home you have”. However, the opposite is also true and if your home is unkempt, it will reflect badly on the homeowners. Homes are a very personal aspect of our lives as we spend most of our time in it. Everything from its condition to its design speaks highly of who we are - much like the fashion trends that we indulge in and the platforms we use to express ourselves, our homes are a testament to our character.
According to a survey by the Independent Network, researchers found that it only takes approximately 38 seconds for someone to pass the verdict on your house. Taking into consideration the state of your dwelling, the condition of your windows, how clean or tidy the environment is to whether there is a funny smell.
A clean and pristine home is thought to belong to those with high discipline and who are hardworking, because a clean home does not happen to be the way it is without some elbow grease. Conversely, a sloppy home environment may suggest that the owner does not prioritize cleanliness and does not pay close attention to detail. Imagine if you were an employer who has the privilege of visiting the homes of your potential employees. Wouldn’t you choose the one who has a more put-together house?
In a bid to impress friends or give first time visitors a good impression on them, homeowners have admitted to giving their houses a deep clean prior to the visitation. According to the survey, 50 percent say that they would vacuum their homes and another 48 percent would attempt to hide their clutter into closets and drawers. If they had more time to prepare for their visitors, 23 percent would decorate their homes with fresh flowers and 30 percent would splurge on food and drink. Another 70 percent believes that clean windows are important to the aesthetic of their house and would make sure they were spotless.
While 80 percent of pollers said that they have changed their perception of other people’s houses at a later date, it has not stopped them from passing judgement. Many pride themselves in having a good eye for interior design and a good judge of decor. The living room is one of the most important aspects of the home, with 33 percent of voters saying that they base their judgement on the overall home by the state of the living room.
Respondents expressed that they do feel societal pressure when it comes to having guests over, even when they are family members, knowing that they will be judged on their living conditions. However, psychologists maintain the stance that we shouldn’t be worried about how other people view our homes, as long as we are comfortable as it is meant to be a safe space for ourselves.
