How to Use Hand Signals and Calls to Avoid Road Hazards |

Could be a pothole, could be a piece of road furniture - but it's imperative that that information is passed on in a clear and unambiguous way. Pointing out holes like this is absolutely crucial. Otherwise, the rider behind might not just only break a wheel, they could knock out their front teeth. The same principles apply to road traffic islands, raised kerbs etc. Generally, the way to play this is to call "left" or "right", as well as waving rearward to the appropriate side. The universal signal for this is to shout out "Oil", but "Car Up" is arguably clearer. I don't think I need to explain this one, do I?

This is used on descents or the approach to a nasty bend or approaching a road junction or line of traffic. Remember, communication is key to a safer and more harmonious group.
