Apple is expected to hold an event to introduce its new iPhones on Sept. 9, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The timing of Apple’s announcement would fall in line with its recent track record of announcing the new phones in early- to mid-September and then starting sales a few weeks later.

The timing of the event was reported earlier by technology news site Re/code. Apple declined to comment.

Later this year, Apple is expected to launch two large-screen iPhones, one with a 4.7-inch display and another with a 5.5-inch display, according to people familiar with the matter. The Cupertino, Calif., company is asking suppliers to manufacture between 70 million and 80 million units combined of the new iPhones – which are larger than the current models with a display measuring 4-inches diagonally.

Apple has stuck with smaller displays on iPhones even as rival smartphone makers rolled out bigger screens and customers clamored for larger phones.

Despite the expectations for a new model, Apple reported strong sales in the quarter ended June 28. The company sold 35.2 million iPhones, up 12.7% from a year earlier and just shy of analysts’ estimates.

Apple’s shares recently traded down 1.1% to $94.56. The stock is up about 18% this year.
