Sydney: The City ofthe YGeneration In spite of the bad press Sydney has been getting about the downside of living in the city, more and more people still choose Sydney over other Australian cities, especially the Millennial generation,also known as Generation Y. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales is home to 4,391,674 people. The population grew by 6.6% within 5 years from the previous survey in 2006. This number is expected to reach 7 million by 2060. Aside from being the most populous city in Australia, it is also the largest and oldest. There is a reason why people choose Sydney. According to the Economist's Global Liveability Report 2011 it ranked 6th as the most liveable city in the world. It was also voted as the world's number one city by readers of Conde Nast Traveler. In the last 10 years, there was an 18% increase in babies born in the city. In addition, migrants to Sydney from overseas who comprise 38% of the city’s population are mostly young people. This accounts for the fairly young demographic profile of the city which is mostly young adults in their late 20s and 30s. Why Millenials choose Sydney But, why Sydney? Let’s take a look at the reasons for this preference.
Sydney, Australia’s economic and financial hub is one city in the world that has barely been affected by the global financial crisis. As per estimate, almost halfof the top 500 companies in Australia and two thirds of multinational corporations’ regional headquarters can be found in NSW, most of them in Sydney. In addition, there was a10.5% increase (2,000 new businesses) in the number of businesses across the city in a 5-year period. As a result, job opportunities area plenty. The work force had an additional 52,306 workers or a 13.6% growth over the same period. Also, almost 75%of the manufacturing jobs in the region are in Sydney. The manufacturing sector accounts for almost half of Sydney’s workforce. Aside from the manufacturing sector, the service sector also offers a big number of job opportunities. These are in the areas of tourism, business and property services; media, information and technology; health and community service and creative and performing arts.
As mentioned earlier, Sydney ranked 6th as the most liveable city in the world. The beautiful natural environment, the quality of its water and air and the well-developed transportation and infrastructure services of Sydney are some of the reasons cited why it ranked high on the quality of life. It enjoys a pleasant climate of no less that -6?C in winter and no more than 35?C in summer. Sydney also boasts of numerous beaches, some of them only within a 10km distance from the city center aside from the popular harbour beaches along the Sydney Harbour coastline. This makes weekends for Sydneysiders something to look forward to. Sydney’s cultural life is vibrant, rich and varied, a mix of the iconic and formal. The City of Sydney values and supports creativity and culture from visual and performing arts, film, architecture, literature, and new media to community events and festival. There are also a great number of excellent facilities for tennis, cricket and football plus the RoyalRandwick racecourse and the numerous golf courses across Sydney. The city is alive with a wide range of exciting cultural and sports events all year round that appeal to the young and even to the not so young.
