The Blizzard Brought Out The Good In People |

Over the weekend I stayed in Hicksville, Long Island at a motel and waited out the snowstorm. I thought I would just be there Friday night - take care of my closings (i handle closings for Quicken Loans) and then head back to NJ. That plan didn't work and with the snow coming down, I spent the day and another night there. There was a little group congregated in the breakfast area and someone came in asking for a shovel to try and go out for food. After everyone informedhim that there was nowhere to go and it wasn't a great idea to try, he lamented that he wanted to get some food. Then without hesitation the people there offered their food to him. He reluctantly accepted. Then someone offered me wine. The next day, I saw many people working together to get cars out of the snow. It was great to see people helping each other out and I realized it's not that often that I see people doing that. It's great to try and help out another person. There is a great study confirming that people get far more satisfaction from helping out and giving to others than they do from receiving. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…/want-to-be-happier-give-m_b…). In my opinion, we need to spend more time talking about how to help people, how to include people, how to get along with people, how we can improve ourselves and our community, how to help young people succeed, and making sure that people have their basic needs met, and that they can be who they are and feel good about who they are. We need to be spending way less time discussing how to build walls, kick people out of our country, arming ourselves, and marginalizing people who don't fit a certain mold because of their ethnic or religious background or their sexual orientation. Let's all commit to being better people - respecting each other and helping each other out and not get sucked into seeing the worst in people and letting politicians divide us. We need to pull together and help each other out just like so many people did during this snowstorm. Sometimes just a smile or acknowledging a person can make a difference to someone's day. The more we can do to help other people the better we'll feel and it gets paid forward. It has a ripple effect. If you are looking for a great way to do something for someone in need I love this charity because it's only $32/month and they do a great job of putting your money to use -https://www.children.org/). It's also a great reminder every month of the less fortunate in the World. If you made it this far - thanks for reading all of this! Have a great day and smile at someone!
