How to fix a Garage Door Opener |
Posted: January 25, 2016 |
A remote control garage door opener is a very handy little electronic device that makes it easy to open the garage door automatically instead of leaving your car and heaving up the door all by yourself. The remote sends a signal to the receiver that triggers a switch, thus promoting an electric motor to either open or close the door. 1) Check the batteries Ensure that the batteries in the remote control are in working order. Because, the most common reason for remote control failure are dead or weak batteries. Prefer name-brand quality batteries to discount brands. 2) Reset the whole system All these receivers and remote controls are like small computers. Therefore, we need to reset them to reboot the circuit boards present in the receiver and remote control. You can reset your remote by removing the batteries for approximately 30 seconds and then reinstalling them. Similarly a receiver can be reset by unplugging it from the wall socket for 30 seconds and then plugging them back. 3) Check the battery contacts Worn, wet or dirty contacts inside the battery case may hinder the electrical current of the batteries from completely reaching the circuit board present in the remote control. If the contacts look discolored, polish it using fine-grit sandpaper, like fine steel wool or 400-grit. If the contacts are wet, then they need to be dried. 5) Clean the Eyes The eye, which allows the signal to pass through during transmitting and receiving, is the plastic covering that is present over the signal unit on both the receiver and the remote control. These eyes can be wiped off using some soft damp cloth. Mostly remote eyes are made of plastic. Though plastic is resistant to scratching, it may get scratched when rubbed against hard metal, some abrasive fibers, or when dropped onto the ground. Some specialized polishing substances can be used to polish the plastic. But if the eyes are gouged or pitted badly then there is no option other than getting a new one. 6) Check the antenna wire
Just like TV remotes, these garage door remotes can break over time and from use as well. If this is the case, then you should get a new remote. Thus, with just a little troubleshooting you can easily avoid a costly service call and have your garage door opener working properly again in no time.
