What is Independent Living? |
Posted: February 9, 2016 |
As the years go by, many people face the possibility of having to revise their current living arrangements. As home upkeep becomes harder, transportation becomes more difficult, and the house begins to feel empty, you may begin to consider moving into an independent living community. Moving into an independent living community can open up many doors and allow you to maintain your independence, even as you age. What exactly is an independent living facility? Simply put, an independent living community is any housing arrangement that is designed exclusively for senior citizens, usually fifty-five years of age or older. Generally, the housing found within an independent living community is constructed to meet the needs of older adults. These buildings are typically smaller and easier to navigate than your average home, and residents do not have to worry about maintenance and upkeep of the home. These communities offer amenities, activities, and services. While you may live independently, you will have the opportunity to connect with others your age, participate in community activities, and live an involved and active life. There are four questions that you can ask yourself in order to determine whether or not making the move into an independent living facility is right for you. First of all, how is easy is it for you to maintain your current home. Has it become a burden with age? Is the yard too large for you to handle the upkeep? Is the house too large for you to maintain by yourself? Do you feel isolated or alone? Independent living can allow you more flexibility and freedom in the long term than hiring outside help to help you maintain your home. Do you have a hard time connecting with your friends and family? The more time you spend alone, the greater your risks of depression or developing other mental health problems. You have a hard time leaving your home, whether it be because you have a hard time driving, getting around, or you just don’t see the point of leaving the house anymore. Independent living facilities come with a built in social network and provide structured activities to keep you active and alive. Do you have a hard time getting around? You may have found that finding transportation to get to your social activities and normal shops is becoming increasingly difficult with each passing year. You may begin finding that you are uncomfortable driving and public transportation isn’t really a good option. Independent living facilities usually offer both onsite activities and transportation to help you get to your outside activities as well. Finally, how is your overall health? As we age, our bodies age with us. We begin to find that our health begins to deteriorate. If you have recently been diagnosed with a health condition, you may find that it has become difficult to stay active. However, if you only need minor assistance with your normal activities of daily living, independent living can be the decision that allows you to remain active and involved for the rest of your life.
