What's thyroiditis? Thyroiditis is an inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is the main cause of hypothyroidism (almost 90% of the cases). There are several types that can cause hypothyroidism thyroiditis: • Hashimoto's disease and atrophic thyroiditis (autoimmune) • Sub-acute thyroiditis De Quatrain (a virus) • Subclinical thyroiditis (without symptoms). Antibodies against the thyroid The cause of thyroiditis is a dysfunction of the immune system. The thyroid gland is not recognized as a body, but as a foreign body. Some of the white blood cells have begun to produce antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO). These substances 'brakes' the thyroid to attack the thyroid tissues. In abnormally high amounts in the blood, there is thyroiditis. Other Causes Some other causes explain by Tom Brimeyer in his program and E-Book Hypothyroidism Revolution: Congenital hypothyroidism Congenital (inborn) hypothyroidism affects about 1 in 4,000 newborns. Girls are twice as likely to experience as boys. That neonatal hypothyroidism may be transient, but is usually permanent. They may be due to a malformation of the thyroid (80% of the cases), disturbances in the synthesis of the thyroid hormones etc. Lack of iodine and cretinism Cretinism is caused by a chronic iodine deficiency and consequent congenital hypothyroidism. The condition is particularly evident as the physical and psychological development stops. With the addition of iodine in certain basic foods (bread, salt) cretinism almost disappeared in Europe. Urgently to treat hypothyroidism Congenital hypothyroidism should be diagnosed early and treated promptly. Without treatment or if treatment is started late, the child is not protected against severe neurological injuries and their consequences (e.g. mental retardation or dementia). As in most industrialized countries is therefore organized a systematic screening of all newborns in Belgium. About 5 days after birth, blood is taken from the heel (heel prick). Therein we can measure the concentration of TSH and / or T4 in order to detect a possible hypothyroidism.
