Mental disorders are very broad-ranging, though the most commonly seen characteristic is that they all may impact an individual’s personality, the way they think, and possibly also their social interactions. Unlike physical illness, they can be very difficult to diagnose clearly. Some 20 percent of people resident in America, according to SAMHSA, suffer from some form of mental disorder, while 5 percent have a disorder that is severe enough that it impacts school, work, and various other elements of daily life.
The Main Types of Mental Health Disorder There are a variety of forms of mental health disorder while symptoms may overlap, which makes the diagnoses more difficult to achieve. Nevertheless, there are some commonplace disorders that impact people of various ages.
Anxiety/ Panic Disorder Anxiety or panic disorder is defined as repeated and intermittent attacks of an intense fear that something bad will occur, or having a sense of forthcoming doom.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) This disorder is characterized through an incapacity to remain focused on a task, excessive activity, impulsive behavior, or an inability to remain still. Though the disorder is diagnosed most commonly within children, it does occur in the adult population.
Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder brings about emotional states in cycle, and that includes anything between depressive and manic phases. Depressive phases include sadness and lethargy, whereas, manic phases are characterized by periods of heightened emotions and extreme activity.
Depression Depression does in fact cover many conditions, but is typically defined in terms of a lack of interest and a persistently bad mood. There can also be bouts of fatigue and lethargy.
Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is not merely about having multiple personalities or hearing distant voices. Rather, its definition comes from an inability to distinguish reality. It can bring about various forms of paranoia.
Why Does Mental Health Disorder Occur? No single cause can be attributed to mental health disorders. Rather, they may be brought about through a mix of psychological, biological, and environmental factors. Those who have mental health disorder within their family history are more prone than otherwise. Alterations in brain chemistry which can occur due to substance abuse or alterations in diet may also bring about mental disorders. Environmental and psychological factors like social exposure and upbringing may formulate the foundations for thought patterns that are harmful and are associated to mental disorder.
