Tips to Keep Money in Your Pocket in College or University The school year is full of stress and spends! If you plan on attending a college or university this September, it isn’t just the classes you need to be worrying about. Food, toiletries, clothes, help with writing papers, pots and pans and so much more are all on your agenda. It is pretty easy to burn away your money, but here are a few tips for you to stay ahead of the game and still keep money in your pocket. Limit your shopping list BBC news states that money stresses for students are more likely to be about lack of spending money than debt. Yet it is the students' large shopping lists that have them ending up with a lack of spending money. Buy only what you need and you will have the extra money later to buy what you want. A lot of people seem to think that they need to buy anything and everything. Here’s a tip – if you or your family never needed it before, you won’t need it at school. You don’t need to buy an entire new knife set to cut your vegetables; chances are one good knife will suit all of your university cooking needs. You don’t need an entire new dish set. You are one person and unless you plan on cooking for 10 people every night, a four piece set will do. Try a set with four pieces instead, four forks, knives, plates, bowls etc. If you are organised and do your dishes right after you use them, you will only need a once piece set – that’s more money in your pocket. The trick to saving money is buying only what you need, not always what you want. You don't need a new bed set – yours from home will work fine. You also don't need an entirely new wardrobe. Save on food Buy Tupperware! Tupperware can be your best friend. It works as a plate when you’re on the go and can save you from wasting food. When you buy food, buy in bulk. It’s cheaper and keeps you from having to keep returning to the store, which can be a hassle when you have homework, friends and tests to deal with. Keep your eyes and ears open. At some point you will need to buy new food, toilet paper and all the other life essentials. Ask around and see where the cheapest spots are; if you have a favorite store ask them when their sales are. Think ahead Make sure you switch to a plan that gives you long distance minutes on your cell phone. You may say now that you won’t be calling your family or friends from home, but when you are homesick chances are that phone is going to be used. Go one step farther and get Skype! Chances are you are going to be at school for more than one year. All the stuff you bought the first year will work then next year too! Not only that, but those plates, pots and pans can last you through as many years as you want!
